Overview
King Khalid Royal Reserve, formerly known as Al-Thumamah Park, is one of the royal reserves in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located northeast of the city of Riyadh, specifically to the southeast of King Khalid International Airport. On 3 Safar 1441 AH / 2 October 2019, approval was issued to transform the park into a royal reserve. The Board of Directors is chaired by HRH Prince Turki bin Mohammed bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz, Minister of State and Member of the Council of Ministers.Area of King Khalid Royal Reserve
King Khalid Royal Reserve extends over an area of approximately 720 km². It falls under the Council of Royal Reserves, which is chaired by His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.The reserve can be reached via a dual-road network from four different directions. It is located 80 km from the center of Riyadh and about 65.6 km from King Khalid International Airport. The reserve has witnessed significant biodiversity and environmental diversity under more than two decades of site protection. It is composed of varied terrain including plateaus, valley systems and rawdat, open plains, and mountainous areas with stunning rock formations.
Tour Highlights
- The reserve includes a natural museum located at the foot of the Al-Arma Mountains. It offers a natural exhibition about geology, ancient artifacts, and various natural formations. The museum covers an area of approximately 2,100 m².The reserve also features cable cars that start from the Botanical Garden station up to the top of the Al-Arma Mountains, to Khashm Al-Thumamah station in the south. Then they pass through Rea’ Al-Thumamah — a wide, easy passage between two mountains — reaching Khashm Al-Thumamah in the north, before descending to the Natural Museum station
- The Safari Park is one of the distinctive landmarks in the reserve. It is an open park that houses animals from different environments in an area with distinctive topography. The park covers an area of approximately 20 million m². The reserve also includes Safari chalets — 20 cabins located on a high hill next to the Safari Park, occupying an area of 3,000 m².King Khalid Royal Reserve also includes a botanical garden, desert camps, daily family camps, and an adventure center. In addition to a youth sports and recreation center, youth camps, a visitors center, and the Saudi Aviation Club. The reserve also hosts the King Khalid Wildlife Research Center, which spans an area of about 7 million m². The center includes offices, laboratories, a visitors center, animal breeding facilities, and a large fenced area.King Khalid Royal Reserve is characterized by a mix of sand dunes and several natural wadis that feed into Wadi Al-Sulay, running alongside those sand dunes, such as Shu’ayb Abu Shajarah
